Tas protest as sheep ship sails away 21 Jan 2004
The Al Shuwaikh, carrying 57,000 live Tasmanian sheep, sailed out of Devonport yesterday for Kuwait amid protests by animal welfare groups. The RSPCA said it hadn't found any problems, with just 20 sheep rejected over the two days of inspections.
Grant Courtney, state secretary of the Australasian Meat Industry Employees' Union, took part in the protest, claiming that the live export trade is costing the jobs of Tasmanian meat workers. Mr Courtney said rural company Roberts, which organised this shipment, will be the next target of protests. If Elders organises shipments too, they will also be targeted, he said.
State Opposition primary industry spokesman Jeremy Rockliff said he fully supported the right of Tasmanian farmers to participate in the live sheep export trade.
