Vic livestock clear of BSE
22 Jan 2004

Victoria's livestock has been given a clean bill of health following last month's BSE scare in the US. State Agriculture Minister, Bob Cameron, said all cattle in the state sourced from countries where BSE is present have been quarantined for life. These include cattle and buffalo from the US, Canada, Japan, the UK and other parts of Europe.

Mr Cameron said Victoria's production chain has been tested over the past year to ensure the state doesn't fall victim to BSE. An audit of 163 producers and processors showed they were not feeding meat and other animal materials to cows, sheep and other ruminants. Mr Cameron said also that all precautionary tests for BSE-related diseases had come up negative.
