Bull market for cattle breeders 30 Jan 2004
JDH Palestimo Manso, an imported American grey Brahman, may be Australia's spunkiest bull. Two packages of five doses of his semen were auctioned this week at Charters Towers for a record $16,000 each. That's an average of $3,200 a straw, or dose, about three times more than the previous top price. Doses from an average stud bull generally cost between $20 and $100. JDH Palestimo Manso's semen doses were bought by Queensland studs Pioneer Park and Elrose.
The sale also saw what's believed to be a record price paid - $36,000 - for a red Brahman bull in northern Australia.
Livestock agent Ken McCaffrey said the prices reflected the strong cattle market. Meat and Livestock Australia's Peter Weeks said the high prices for beef genetics, as well as for cattle properties in northern Australia, show strong investor interest in the beef industry.
