Fight to keep live exports
9 Feb 2004

The Victorian Farmers' Federation's livestock president will lobby against the potential suspension of live exports from Portland tomorrow by highlighting improvements in animal welfare. Simon Ramsay will lobby in Canberra tomorrow at a federal Agriculture Department roundtable, following a meeting in Portland last week which voted to keep the live trade going.

Mr Ramsay will tell the roundtable that animal welfare is an industry priority and that live exports from Portland are a crucial part of the local economy. He will also say there's no scientific data to justify closing the Portland and Adelaide ports between May and October, the northern hemisphere summer.

The Age, 9/2/04.
