Livestock slaughter rates lift in Dec quarter: ABS
13 Feb 2004

Australian livestock slaughter rates increased in the December 2003 quarter, the first rise in a year. Slaughter rates for cattle, sheep and lambs all increased after declining in the wake of the drought.

The number of steers and bulls slaughtered rose 8.3 per cent to 995,000, while the cow and heifer slaughter rate increased slightly to 983,000. Sheep slaughter numbers leapt 22.6 per cent to 2.5 million, and the lamb slaughter rate rose 6.3 per cent to 4.1 million.

The increased slaughter rates resulted in a rise in beef production to almost 500,000 tonnes; mutton was up 26.8 per cent to 54,300 tonnes and lamb was up 9.1 per cent to 85,700 tonnes.

The pig slaughter rate fell marginally to 1.39 million, and pigmeat production dropped to 100,000 tonnes. The number of chickens slaughtered fell by three per cent to 104 million, with chicken meat production decreasing to 170,000 tonnes.
