Beef recovery under threat
16 Feb 2004

Meat and Livestock Australia says that the rising Australian dollar - now worth US78 cents - and concerns about disease are undermining the beef industry's recovery from the drought. MLA, in its latest five-year projections, says that live beef exports are also likely to decrease. Peter Weeks, MLA's chief market analyst, said conditions are improving for the Australian beef sector following the drought, but the discovery of BSE in the US will hurt the industry.

Lamb and mutton producers will fare better, however, with exports to the US and Asia likely to climb, MLA says.

The Daily Telegraph, 16/2/04, page 14.
