Feral pig move welcomed
18 Feb 2004

Federal Parliament has supported a move for a national approach to the feral pig problem, with a resolution being passed this week in the House of Representatives. NSW independent MP Peter Andren put forward the resolution and said feral pigs are a threat to livestock and the environment, as well as potential carriers of exotic diseases.

The Cattle Council of Australia hailed the resolution as a "significant step forward" in the campaign to eradicate feral pigs. Deputy director Michael Hartmann said current control programs are on a state-by-state basis, which will never succeed as long as the pigs ignore state boundaries. CCA will now urge the Federal Government to stand by the resolution and bring the states together to agree on a national strategy.
