Bigger beef quota only for hamburgers 20 Feb 2004
Australia's entitlement to export more beef to the US under the free trade agreement will only apply to relatively low-value beef products, a Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade official said yesterday. The FTA will increase Australia's US beef quota from the current level of 378,000 tonnes a year to 448,000 tonnes.
However, the FTA states the additional 70,000 tonnes could only be filled by exports of manufacturing beef, mainly used for hamburgers, rather than higher-value chilled beef cuts, the official said. But the FTA will generally benefit Australian beef producers, despite this restriction. Australian producers could boost exports of higher-value beef by using more of the existing 378,000 tonnes of quota for higher value-added products, he stated.
