Beef demand, prices to surge
24 Feb 2004

Meat and Livestock Australia sees a bright future for the nation's beef industry, as higher demand and prices offset the rising $AUD. Price rises will be pushed further by rising demand in Australia, the end of the drought and the discovery of BSE in the US, which will lift South Korean and Japanese demand.

MLA's Peter Weeks said beef demand in both Australia and the US has been lifted over the past three to four years by the popularity of the high protein/low carbohydrate diet. This has been enhanced by nutritional research and marketing, Meat Standards Australia's grading program, and better beef quality and consistency through grain feeding.

But Mr Weeks also said it's likely to take the rest of the decade to build beef output back to the pre-drought level.

The Age, 24/2/04.
