Australia braces for pig war with EU
27 Feb 2004

Australia is set to go to war with the European Union over its pork subsidies. Agriculture Minister Warren Truss has warned his EU counterpart that Australia may take WTO action over the subsidies, and said tariffs may even be applied to EU pigmeat imported into Australia. Anti-dumping laws may also be used.

The EU introduced pork subsidies in late January due to subdued domestic demand, low prices and high grain costs. The subsidies will end in April.

Australian farmers believe the local market will be hit. The high $AUD has reduced the price of imported pigmeat and undermined local producers.

The EU rejected Mr Truss's claims and said its subsidies would not affect Australian farmers.
