Animal exports welfare warning 3 Mar 2004
Agriculture Minister Warren Truss has warned live animal exporters that they will lose their licences if they do not improve and meet welfare standards. Mr Truss said that exporters, not farmers, will lose out if poor shipment welfare standards do not improve. Mr Truss was commenting after the release of a damning report into last year's Cormo Express debacle. Live shipments to Saudi Arabia are still banned, until an agreement can be made about Middle East holding facilities should shipments be stranded.
Meanwhile another new report, commissioned by Mr Truss last year, states that supermarkets are not pushing up profits at the expense of farmers. The supermarkets are also doing it tough, with small profit margins and increasing competition. The report found the main reasons affecting farm prices in Australia are production levels, global prices, compliance with regulations, and innovations and technology.
