Tassie fee for 1080 use
5 Mar 2004

Landholders in Tasmania will have to pay a fee from next week for using 1080 to control browsing animals. The charge, $18.15 per 100ml, will be reviewed annually.

The Tasmanian Environment Minister said the money collected would help landholders to find alternative methods of animal control. She said the State Government recognised that Tasmania has a large number of browsing animals and the impact these can have on primary industries, but the Government is committed to reducing the use of 1080.

The Forest Industries Association was unhappy with the move, and said a lot of money has been spent on researching alternatives to 1080 and now some of that money will now be redirected to employing people in the State Government. The Tasmanian Farmers' and Graziers' Association wanted to further assess the move before making a comment.

The Mercury, 5/3/04.
