Live export sector aims for Middle East growth
15 Mar 2004

Dr Nigel Brown, a vet who has run the live animal export trade to the Middle East and Africa for Meat & Livestock Australia and LiveCorp for the past two years, says the $1 billion industry has been misrepresented and has a strong future.

Dr Brown was at the centre of the Cormo Express debacle last year and admits that a few of the sheep had scabby mouth as their vaccinations before leaving Australia were inadequate. But it's not a life-threatening disease and sheep usually recover after a few days. The industry has slumped since then, however.

Dr Brown also said that Australia has done a lot to improve animal welfare in the Middle East. If we weren't there, no one else would do it, he stated.

The Age, 15/3/04.
