Fix the problems and we'll walk: RSPCA 17 Mar 2004
The RSPCA says that if the animal welfare problems are fixed it will leave the live export industry alone. President Hugh Wirth, speaking at the Rural Press Club of Victoria, said "the RSPCA will butt out of this when the problems are met ... fix the husbandry of it and we will walk away".
However, Dr Wirth said while he's confident the industry has the capacity to fix the problems, he's not confident that action will be taken. Most problems occur before shipments are loaded, he said, with the RSPCA concerned about such issues as the selection of animals, transport to feedlots, treatment at the feedlots and loading of animals onto ships.
VFF livestock president Simon Ramsay responded that the RSPCA has not acknowledged the improvements that came out of the Keniry review. Mr Ramsay said the RSPCA is "not listening" and the VFF looks forward to the organisation "walking away" from the issue.
