EU pork subsidies go after Australian call
23 Mar 2004

The European Union has brought forward its end-date for short-term pork subsidies, which were due to finish in April. Federal Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, said the subsidies were cut in response to Australian concerns over the issue.

The EU provided the subsides to pig producers to offset depressed world prices and drought conditions in Europe. Mr Truss said the EU had responded to these issues wrongly in the first place and should not have introduced the subsidies, although they didn't directly affect EU pork imports to Australia. He said the European Commission reacted by providing more subsidies, limiting any improvements in competitiveness and putting off the inevitable industry restructuring.

The Daily Telegraph, 23/3/04.
