RSPCA switches stance 8 Apr 2004
The RSPCA has again switched its stance on live animal exports, issuing a statement calling for a ban on the industry. The RSPCA said only a total ban would guarantee an "end to the cruelty".
The statement is at odds with comments made by RSPCA president Hugh Wirth last month, who said the organisation would "walk away" from its campaign against live exports if animal welfare concerns were addressed.
Following the release of the Keniry review into the industry and the Government's response, the RSPCA has reverted to its original stance. It said it was disappointed that not all of the review's recommendations had been accepted and that no amount of reform could change the fact "that there is inherent cruelty in the long-distance transport of animals and no real control of what happens in the country of destination".
