Protesters keep sheep ship vigil 22 Apr 2004
Animal rights activists are maintaining a vigil at Portland Harbour in a bid to stop the loading of up to 80,000 live sheep aboard the Al Messilah, bound for the Middle East. Animal Liberation's Mark Pearson ruled out contaminating the stockfeed, but said 70,000-80,000 sheep had been locked in a feedlot for more than a week. This breached exporters' industry guidelines, he said, which were designed to prevent stock stress and disease.
Mr Pearson said the protest will be ongoing, as Animal Liberation is determined to stop the live trade. The Keniry inquiry was not nearly sufficient to address AL's concerns about live sheep exports, he stated. The group wants the live trade "relegated to history".
