Meat exports surge

Exports of Australian beef and lamb are booming as demand lifts in the US, Japan and South Korea. Beef and veal exports increased by 9 per cent to 76,598 tonnes in March 2004. Sales to Japan totalled 29,713 tonnes, up 29 per cent on March 2003, with grain-fed exports up 38 per cent. For the March 2004 quarter, beef and veal exports reached a record 88,430 tonnes.

Lamb exports surged to record levels in the March 2004 quarter to 28,145 tonnes, up 13 per cent on the March 2003 quarter. Sales to Japan in March 2004 were up 55 per cent on March 2003, and exports to China jumped 89 per cent in the month compared with last year. The US, Australia's biggest market, took 10 per cent more lamb in March 2004 than in March 2003.
