Roo meat a 'disease preventer'
27 Apr 2004

Research by a WA animal biology student, in collaboration with CSIRO Livestock Industries, has found that kangaroo meat is rich in a healthy fat. In addition to being a very lean high-protein meat, kangaroo may be the best source of conjugated linoleic acid, which is found in smaller quantities in dairy products, lamb and beef.

The researcher, Clare Engelke, said she found five more times CLA in western grey kangaroos than in lamb. Why this is so is unclear, but unidentified bacteria in kangaroos could be responsible, as could an enzyme in their tissue.

Ms Engelke said the next step will be to identify the source, which could possibly be transferred to livestock to lift their production of the healthy fats. In tests on rats, CLA has been shown to be an anti-carcinogen which may boost the immune system. It may also have anti-diabetes properties and limit plaque in arteries.
