Fox fears grow as Tassie sightings soar
1 Apr 2004

Tasmania's Fox-Free Taskforce has received a sudden rush of sightings, with nine received between last Friday and this Tuesday. The normal rate of sightings is between three and six a fortnight. The taskforce said the increased rate could indicate that foxes have been breeding and the young have gone out in search of their own territories. But the sightings could also be a case of mistaken identity, the taskforce said.

There has been a decline in sightings since the 1080 baiting program began, but without recovering carcases it's difficult to verify whether foxes have been taking the baits. The most recent carcase found was in Burnie last October. Sightings can be reported to the taskforce on 1300 369 688.
