Duffer steals 200 in saleyard raids 3 May 2004
Saleyards across New South Wales and Victoria have been hit by a series of cattle thefts. Stock valued at more than $150,000 have been stolen from saleyards which are kept unlocked so that buyers can enter after hours to pick up cattle bought during the day.
It's believed that one man is responsible for all the thefts; he travels in a dark-coloured Kenworth double-decker truck with a green stock crate. He selects animals of his choice and is probably someone with inside knowledge. Police believe the truck is from a northern state; its roof is fitted with a white air-conditioner and it's the front compartment of a road train.
David Pollock, CEO of the Livestock Saleyards Association of Victoria, said the industry will now look at reviewing security and fitting locks. Mr Pollock said the new ear-tag ID system would not help to deter thefts until it it has been adopted nationwide. Cattle could still be sold to corrupt abattoirs regardless of whether they have ear tags.
