WA farmers chase halal market 7 May 2004
A WA wheatbelt farmer co-op has begun a joint venture with Perak State Development Corporation in Malaysia to export halal-certified meat. Under the deal 100,000 sheep and 16,000 cattle will be killed in WA each year under halal slaughter codes. The meat will be sent to Malaysia for packaging and marketed under a halal label to Muslim countries throughout the world.
The co-op is negotiating for the slaughter to be carried out at Walsh's in Bunbury and hopes to start exporting within 12 months. Dowerin farmer and co-operative chairman Michael Irvine said that while other WA processors carry out a halal slaughter, the Malaysians wanted to deal directly with farmers to ensure a transparent and authentic halal slaughter process.
The co-op is made up of eight farmers and the books are open for expressions of interest by other farmers, Mr Irvine said.
