Pigmeat imports cleared 11 May 2004
Biosecurity Australia has cleared the way for the importation of pigmeat from 11 overseas countries, after an independent panel rejected five separate appeals against BA's impact risk analysis. Australia's director of animal and plant quarantine said in a statement that the new regimen would not put the local pig herd at risk. The new quarantine conditions for imports of pig meat tighten the situation that has been in place for the past 13 years, he said.
Countries wanting to export pigmeat to Australia will have to meet strict criteria. The bones and major lymph nodes must be removed from the meat before it is either cooked or cured.
But Australian Pork Ltd said the decision opens Australia's pig industry to the threat of disease. Chairman Paul Higgins claimed there's now a 95 per cent chance of an exotic disease outbreak occurring within the next 10 years. APL will consider a legal challenge to BA's IRA.
