Fowl play on GM-free labels
13 May 2004

Consumer resistance to anything genetically modified has led to some poultry producers labelling their chickens "GM free". But the Australian Consumers' Association has complained to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission about this practice, alleging that Inghams Enterprises, Baiada and Bartter Enterprises/Steggles Foods Products are misleading consumers.

There is no such thing as a GM chicken on the Australian market, the ACA argues, and by using the "GM free" tag these producers are implying that their competitors' products are genetically modified. The ACCC confirmed this week it is looking into the complaint, which also claims that the "GM free" tag is misleading because many chickens have been fed GM soy. According to a report by Biosecurity Australia last November, 66 per cent of Australians believe that food made from animals which ate GM feed is itself GM.

Australian Financial Review, 13/5/04.
