All-party committee rejects pigmeat import plan
14 May 2004

An all-party Senate committee has backed the overturning of Biosecurity Australia's decision to allow the importation of pigmeat from 11 countries. The Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport committee believes the disease risks posed by pigmeat imports from these countries is too great.

This week the pigmeat import risk analysis compiled by Biosecurity Australia was cleared, despite warnings from the local pork industry that the move would almost guarantee the introduction of diseases such as post-weaning multi-systemic wasting syndrome. The Senate committee said there is still too much uncertainty over the cause of PMWS for BA to be sure it would not inadvertently enter Australia. The safety precautions recommended by BA to keep out PMWS may not in fact work.

Australian Pork Ltd chairman Paul Higgins said the committee's recommendations should be adopted immediately.
