Rain gives WA grains men a start 17 May 2004
WA grain growers plan to sow thousands of hectares this week, as they prepare for an expected break in the season. Weekend rains signalled a good start, particularly in the south-west of the Wheatbelt, with the patchy rains enough to germinate canola and lupins that were seeded early.
The WA Farmers' Federation said Wheatbelt growers are waiting for good falls. Some have dry-seeded lupins and canola, which could be very risky if little to no follow-up rain falls. Up to 20mm-30mm is needed to soften up the ground before farmers can start planting.
Pastoralists' and Graziers' Association grains division said good falls have been recorded on the coast north of Perth, but rain is still needed in areas further east around Trayning, Southern Cross and Merredin.
