Ant threat may cost farmers millions 18 May 2004
Fire ant infestations could cost South Australian farmers millions of dollars in eradication programs. The SA Research & Development Institute is warning farmers to look out for the pest on their properties, following outbreaks in Brisbane. CSIRO says fire ants could survive in most areas, threatening livestock and cropping operations, the safety of producers and native vegetation.
The $145 million government-funded National Fire Ant Eradication Program is now in its third year, but if the problem becomes widespread and funding is not extended, farmers could be forced to pay for eradication.
In SA, surveys are being conducted on "import sites", including Adelaide Airport, Port Adelaide and Outer Harbor docks, and transport sites receiving goods from Queensland and overseas.
