Pork industry fights imports
26 May 2004

The pork industry will take legal action against the Federal Government to force Biosecurity Australia to rethink its decision to widen pig meat imports. Australian Pork Ltd has decided to launch an administrative law challenge in the Federal Court.

APL chairman Paul Higgins said the new quarantine regimen created a 95 to 99 per cent likelihood within the next 10 years of an exotic disease outbreak, particularly Post Weaning Multi-Systemic Wasting Syndrome.

APL expects to launch the action by the middle of June and will allege that Biosecurity Australia did not adequately take into account available scientific evidence concerning the dangers of pig meat imports.

Australian Financial Review, 25/5/04.
