Police say no to livestock theft squad 26 May 2004
The push to re-establish a livestock theft squad appears to have failed, with Victoria Police saying thefts would remain a matter for local police. Senior Constable Rod McLachlan, of Donald, said the stock squad would not be re-established in the near future. Detective Superintendent Doug O'Loughlin said the number of livestock thefts was not enough to warrant a stock squad.
Constable McLachlan said there were more than 100 police trained in investigating stock theft across Victoria. Supt O'Loughlin said 116 police officers had attended a series of seminars on rural crime, including livestock theft, over the past two years. In effect, we already have a stock squad, he stated. Each of these police officers is accessible to assist and advise other police investigating stock theft.
