Stolen sheep ID push
27 May 2004

Police are calling for national vendor declarations (NVDs) to be made compulsory for sheep producers, transport operators and agents, in a bid to reduce livestock theft. The call comes after a spate of sheep thefts in north-west Victoria over the past few months.

Senior Constable Rod McLachlan said prevention of livestock theft requires full co-operation from farmers and industry leaders, but he also wants to see Victorian legislation brought into line with some of the other states.

One sheep producer said it would be a "logistical nightmare" for all sheep sales to be checked. But she said the industry certainly supports the use of NVDs and ear tags.

The Victorian Farmers' Federation said it doesn't have a policy of mandatory NVDs for sheep producers but actively encourages livestock producers to use NVDs. The VFF said more police resources and funding are required in country areas to tackle livestock theft.

Weekly Times, 26/5/04, page 7.
