Evidence in, foxes are in Tas in force
1 Jun 2004

Tasmania's Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment says there's ample evidence to show the state has plenty of foxes. The Department's Alex Schaap said officers have found footprints and scats, and there have been many sightings.

DNA from a fox carcase found at Burnie in October 2003 has been sent to an expert to determine if matches the DNA of foxes at Melbourne's Webb Dock. The Department is hoping to find out if the fox had been resident in Tasmania or was a recent arrival by ship. But Mr Schaap said there's lots of evidence showing that Tasmania has more than one fox.

Environment Minister Judy Jackson said there have been 730 sightings of foxes in Tasmania, of which 120 were credible.

The Mercury, 1/6/04.
