Rift over pig legal fight
3 Jun 2004

A conflict is brewing amongst livestock industries over the pork industry's legal bid to overturn new quarantine rules for pigmeat imports. Other industries, including sections of the cattle and dairy industries, are fearful that if the bid is successful it will spark wider challenges to Australia's quarantine rules.

Their concerns have been heightened by a report prepared for the National Farmers' Federation which strongly supports the decision by Biosecurity Australia to allow more countries to export pigmeat to Australia under various safeguards. It disputes Australian Pork Ltd's concerns about the risks of importing new pig diseases. The NFF will consider the report at its council meeting this month and is likely to reiterate its stance to keep quarantine issues within a science-based framework.

The Cattle Council said the NFF report found that BA's new rules had been based on good science and proper import risk assessment procedures.
