Wheat trade collapses in bad year for regional areas 4 Jun 2004
Rural and regional Australia is continuing to struggle in terms of exports, new figures from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade show. Some of Australia's most important exports have slumped following the drought and the international economic downturn. The most significant change was the fact that wheat was not in Australia's top 10 exports for the first time since 1969. Wheat exports came in at No 11, after falling 41.6 per cent to $2.4 billion.
Other farm exports also suffered due to the drought. Beef exports, in sixth place, were down 12.8 per cent to $3.6 billion; wool exports, at No 9, were down 29.1 per cent to $2.5 billion; lamb and mutton exports fell 8.2 per cent to $1.5 billion.
