Lambs break the magic 500c/kg barrier 9 Jun 2004
Lamb prices are continuing their strong rise, passing the 500c/kg mark for the first time in 2004. Last week in Wagga Wagga, the market of 18,000 head was up to $18 a head dearer. At Bendigo's Monday market, trade lambs rose $8-$10 and heavy types were firm to $2 lower. The best carcass price reported so far this year is 527c/kg for a line of 20-22kg, three-score lambs at Wagga Wagga last week.
All Meat and Livestock Australia national indicators for lamb are now above 400c/kg, with the highest 425c/kg for supermarket lambs, weighing 20-22kg. MLA said the lamb market could rise even further as supplies decreased. The rise is due to the dry Autumn, which forced many lambs onto the market early.
ABS data supports this theory, with slaughter statistics for April the highest since 1987. About 1.46 million lambs were processed in the month, with most (583,000 head) in Victoria.
