RSPCA live sheep trade conflict
22 Jun 2004

The RSPCA's WA branch is in turmoil after allegations it faces a conflict of interest over the live animal trade, as two of its members are involved in the live sheep trade. A branch member called on the president and CEO to resign after a TV program questioned whether the organisation is prevented from acting as it has two farmers on the council who are involved in the live sheep trade.

Animals Australia has been pressing the RSPCA to act against the live trade but said it has lost confidence in the organisation and will drop its request for the RSPCA to act for it legally.

The RSPCA's federal president Hugh Wirth said he had first expressed concerns to the WA president Eric Paul about the issue last year, but could not intervene as each state's branch is autonomous.

Mr Paul said yesterday he believes there has been no conflict of interest and no impropriety. He believes in a balanced council that reflects all community views, including those of animal liberationists and farmers.
