Beef industry reaches grading consensus
24 Jun 2004

A breakthrough in negotiations within the Red Meat Advisory Council last week means the path is now clear for the red meat industry to move towards the introduction of a consumer-friendly beef labelling and grading system. The RMAC board resolved unanimously last week to accept a grading and labelling model for all beef sold on the domestic market. The proposal is now with Federal Agriculture Minister Warren Truss for final approval.

The provision of terms for all cuts of beef will use the AusMeat language, expanded by extensions to MSA such as the new hot grading and cuts-based grading, and the existing retail "Budget Beef" description code. The voluntary standard will be designed to address eating quality and cover links in the supply chain, post-farmgate, from processors to wholesalers to retail outlets.
