NSW abattoir cuts 150 jobs
5 Jul 2004

The small community of Harden in New South Wales' south-west has been shocked by the sudden closure of Harden Abattoir. The 150 staff were informed of the immediate shutdown on Friday, with the abattoir expected to stay closed for at least 12 months, or longer.

Harden joins other meatworks in NSW forced to close due to the lingering effects of the drought and reduced numbers of stock available for slaughter. Over the past 18 months, abattoirs in Mudgee, Forbes, Orange and Woy Woy have closed, with a total loss of nearly 500 jobs.

Harden Mayor Chris Manchester said the abattoir was the town's largest employer and its loss would be a massive blow to the community. Harden has a population of about 3,900, and its local economy relies heavily on farming and related industries.

The Daily Telegraph, 5/7/04.
