Lamb prices soar but not in Tassie 7 Jul 2004
Lamb prices are surging in Victoria due to the drought and the smallest national flock since 1946, but in Tasmania the increases have not been as dramatic as on the mainland. Tassie prices have gone up by around 20 per cent in the last two months, which is about the same as last year. This will probably continue until the end of August when the new season Spring lamb comes onto the market in greater numbers; prices should then go back down.
The shortage of lambs on the mainland has led some buyers to buy cheaper Tasmanian lambs. One of the factors keeping lamb prices in Tasmania lower is the good price being paid for lamb skins.
Tasmanian Farmers' and Graziers' Association Meat Council said the price rises are good for Tassie farmers. Lambs were being sold for $35 a few years ago, but now they're going for $140 in Tasmania and $180 on the mainland.
