SA farmers in clover as lamb prices hit $170 heights 9 Jul 2004
Lamb prices are hitting record levels around South Australia. Last week, a record price of more than $170 was paid at the Dublin markets for export lambs, and lambs going into the domestic market are fetching up to $115. This week, prices hovered around $150, with domestic buyers paying as much as $145.
Wild Horse Plains fat lamb grower Peter Walker thinks the high prices farmers paid when they were rebuilding their flocks after the drought is having an effect. And many farmers seem to have increased their cropping operations, which has kept sheep numbers down.
South Australian Livestock Exchange's Michael Blight said sellers have enjoyed the high prices, but they're not expected to stay this high for too much longer. Elders Livestock Agents SA's Andrew Lepley said even though the season is coming to a close, prices will be brought down by consumers. If prices get too high they'll just stop buying lamb.
