Changes to RAS competition
9 Jul 2004

The Royal Melbourne Show led steer and heifer beef carcase competition has been redesigned to reflect current industry specifications and requirements. The new arrangements also increase opportunities for more exhibitors of superior steers, heifers and carcases to be recognised for their efforts and abilities to breed, prepare and exhibit high quality cattle, RAS councillor Geoff Phillips said.

The number of championships and reserves available has been increased to 18 from the previous four, with hoof championships now scheduled.

Entries will be weighed live and then allocated to classes of about 20 head within light weight (300 to 380 kilograms), middle weight (381 to 460kg) and heavy weight (461 to 700kg) sections. Hoof and hook championships and reserves will be awarded in each section with hoof and hook grand championships.

The only basic change to the system of carcase judging will be the removal of the requirement for carcase weights to fall within specific areas.

There's a special school and college handlers' day which will be held on September 20, and also a new award for the most successful school or college, which will be awarded on the basis of points gained in the handlers' competition and on the hoof and hook. The Borthwick Trophy will continue as before.

Entries close on July 14. Schedules are available on the web site www.rasv.com.au or by calling Scott Hamilton on (03) 9281 7422.
