Stampede for beef
12 Jul 2004

Farmers at the saleyards are smiling as they respond to a strong demand for beef and sell off the cattle they've battled to keep throughout the drought. Herds have been depleted by up to 60 per cent. It's a balancing act to decide whether to sell to cash in on high prices or retain key breeding cattle for the time when rains finally come.

At Gloucester sales over the week about 600 head brought prices of up to $2.15 a kilogram for butcher's cattle. There was a variety of breeds available and most went to export, while some cows and calves were sold to the domestic market.

Predictions are for the strengthening export market to continue rising over the next five to 10 years.

The Daily Telegraph, 10/7/04.
