Unkind cut for meat buyers 19 Jul 2004
South Australians are facing skyrocketing meat prices, with the lingering effects of the drought forcing up prices of beef and lamb over the past 12 months. The Australian Meat Industry Council (SA) says dwindling stock numbers are dictating prices. Farmers are hanging on to their stock for breeding to increase the supplies available. And a rise in overseas demand has pushed up prices, with exports increasing to a number of countries.
Retail prices are reaching record highs, with beef rump steak, for example, now $16.92/kg - up almost 200 per cent on its average price of $6.09/kg 10 years ago.
Although the lambing season begins at the end of August, AMIC doesn't expect consumers will get much more out of their purses for some months. Prices may drop only slightly.
