Hogget dressed as lamb? Not in a pink fit 22 Jul 2004
What passes as lamb in New Zealand is given the less flattering name of hogget in Australia. Kiwis deem an animal with up to two adult teeth to be a lamb, whereas in Australia a lamb is a young sheep that hasn't yet cut its adult teeth. Then its carcass is stamped with the well-known pink branding.
There's a big price difference between premium lamb and hogget, so some Australian lamb growers are battling to change the local definition. It's particularly pertinent at the moment, as the dry conditions in much of south-western Australia have meant a lack of soft grass and lambs have cut their adult teeth sooner.
The issue was put to vote at the NSW Farmers' Association annual conference yesterday, but the motion was defeated. The Sheepmeat Council of Australia said the definition of a lamb is "black and white" and must stay that way.
