NLIS gets nod of approval in NSW

Farmers at the annual conference of the NSW Farmers' Association last week voted to endorse the National Livestock Identification System. The result was a big difference to last year, when objection and rejection were the main sentiments. This year an overwhelming majority declared they are willing to give it a go: they voted against any motions to delay the scheme or reject the costing for its implementation.
The issue did attract some fierce debate however, with many delegates arguing the system doesn't yet work properly and questioning if it will deliver the claimed benefits. A motion to push for financial assistance for producers to implement the scheme and an independent assessment of the associated costs was also lost.
The association's senior vice president, Rob Anderson, said the NLIS is "cheap insurance" and farmers can't afford to delay its implementation. Cattle committee chairman, Nick Keatinge, said the NSW Government is "on notice" and will have to ensure NLIS is working to a satisfactory standard before the second phase is implemented in 2005.
