Pork industry takes quarantine issue to court 11 Aug 2004
Pig producers have launched a move against new quarantine rules, in the first legal challenge to Australia's quarantine laws by an agricultural group. Australian Pork Ltd has begun action against new laws allowing up to 11 countries to sell pork into Australia.
APL said Biosecurity Australia's move to approve an import risk analysis makes Australia vulnerable to an outbreak of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome. Australia is one of the few countries in the world which is free of the disease. APL's barrister said there would be a 96-99 per cent chance of outbreak in the next 10 years, as the laws relax the conditions under which pig meat can be brought into Australia.
However the barrister representing Biosecurity Australia argued the figures were questionable and disputed that the laws have been relaxed.
A further directions hearing has been set down for August 31.
