Beef feedlot steaks high
12 Aug 2004

A $50 million feedlot has been earmarked for the Riverina. The NSW Government and Agricultural Equity Investments have discussed the development on a site between Mathoura and Echuca. The feedlot would provide jobs for 50-60 people, carry 80,000 cattle and could be the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere.

AEI plans to build the feedlot on the 1,200ha Moira Station, 15km south of Mathoura. The company will buy the property once approval for the feedlot is received. Much work, including an environmental impact statement, has to be done before the venture is approved. If it goes ahead, the flow-on benefits would be enormous, according to Murray Shire mayor Brian Sharp. It would be a win for employment in the region, benefit grain and cattle producers, as well as the district's transport operators. It's a win-win situation, he said.
