Pig industry faces new PC probe
1 Sep 2004

The Productivity Commission will investigate the Australian pork industry, looking at the economic problems facing the industry. The inquiry will run for five months and investigate issues such as profitability, competitiveness and the industry's long-term future. It follows complaints about higher operating costs and increased imports.

The Coalition Government announced a similar Productivity Commission inquiry just prior to the 1998 federal election.

Labor has also pledged a PC inquiry into the industry if it wins government this year, as well as looking at safeguards to protect pork producers from cheap imports.

The Age, 31/8/04.
