Qld graziers end their beef over tags 3 Sep 2004
The Queensland beef industry has ended its dispute with the State Government over the adoption of the National Livestock Identification Scheme. Graziers will be required to use the NLIS from the start of 2005, but after lobbying for immunity for cattle being moved from their properties of origin direct to slaughter or live export, producers have won exemption for the first two years of the scheme. However, those cattle's movements will be still be recorded on a central database.
Producers had objected to the cost of implementation. Victoria and NSW have already adopted NLIS but Queensland and Northern Territory argued that the different nature of their industry, especially their vast properties, made a mandatory tracing system unnecessary.
AgForce said although it had pushed for a voluntary NLIS rollout, it's satisfied with the compromise reached with the Queensland Government. The phased-in approach means livestock producers will save up to $80 million over the next two years, AgForce said.
