Shoppers eat well on red meat

Red meat demand has increased in the past year. Meat and Livestock Australia says beef demand increased by 2.5 per cent during 2003/04 from 737,000 tonnes to 756,000 tonnes, while lamb rose by one per cent from 216,000 tonnes to 218,000 tonnes. MLA said consumer spending on beef increased by $438 million, or eight per cent, in 2003/04m while spending on lamb increased by 14 per cent or $209 million. Consumers spent more than $8 billion on red meat last year.
