Live cattle export numbers slump
5 Oct 2004

Fewer live cattle were exported in August but the value was higher, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported. The number of cattle shipped was down 10 per cent on last year to the lowest August total since 1998, of 56,630 head. But they were worth 38 per cent more. The ABS said that shipments for the first eight months of 2004 were at record lows, mainly due to the stronger Australian dollar making cattle more expensive for South East Asian buyers, and competition from Indian buffalo to Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia.
